I think that a decade from now, when imitators have wrung this particular tactic dry, we'll look back on some of these choices and view them as being as excessive as Lucas's overuse of CGI in the prequels. These sequences at these lengths are the sign of a filmmaker who is indulging in his passions at the cost of effective movie-making. It's frustrating.

I find it frustrating because there is so much greatness in Villeneuve's works, but his incapacity for self-restraint makes the films less accessible, less watchable, and--to be blunt--boring. The exciting stuff in these films, the things that make them film and not screen-savers, they are really good, but they are overwhelmed by elaborate long shots of scenery.

So many of these scenes could have been tighter, and there were sequences in there that were just overly long and gratuitous. The problem we have is that good film comes out of team work and these days either the studio interferes to the point of insanity or the director is given total free reign and honestly neither of those things work for good film.

Look, I think the two new Dune movies are fine, but honestly, editing is part of the art of film and while I can see the need for two parts, neither film needed to be as long as it did, especially the 2nd one.

I appreciate the work put in to the 2nd film to make the 'hey, you should not be a fan of Paul' stuff way clearer, and the acting is all really great.

The constant switching between horizontal double truck layouts and standard vertical page panels is impossible to follow, I end up missing the switch every time and reading panels out of order constantly. The gutter is constantly lost in the spine and mixing in unmotivated bleeds makes it even harder to detect the switches. How is no one talking about this, am I going crazy?

Is there a self-hosted alternative to SiteLeaf out there that I'm missing? I like the idea of a git-synced layer that can make a flat-file site accessible to non-engineers/non-markdown folks.
